Soho So & Todd Lam @ Pengguin: Artists and Graphic Designers with Draw HK

Why did you set up "Pengguin"?

Soho + Todd: We both feel that exhibitions can be really influential. We wanted to explore the possibilities of a new type of exhibition, to present life and cultural values from a design perspective.

What do you need to be a good designer?

Soho: You need to be curious and childlike, to be able to look for the playfulness and humour in everything around you.

Todd: You need to be curious, question everything, and have a real desire to make something beautiful. 

What do you do if you're looking for inspiration?

Soho: Going for walks helps to clear my mind and lets inspiration come naturally.  

Todd: Relax and look at my surroundings.          

What do you think a good design should be?

Soho: A good design should deliver an effective message and convey a sense of beauty.

Todd: A design that delivers the right message is a good design. 

What advice do you have for youngsters who are passionate about design?

Soho: To be a designer, you need to observe everything around you and tap into the element of beauty, then create a lot, and try out different techniques. Train your eyes and hands so that you can create effectively.

Todd: Be humble and curious. Think about the design concepts behind other people’s work, not just the appearance.

Who is your favourite artist? Why?

Soho: Julian Opie. He can make anything super flat and then give it vitality.

Todd: Mark Rothko. I like his bold use of composition and colour. His paintings are really stunning.
